Healthy Weight for Life: Reducing Obesity and Maintaining Healthy BMI in Australia

By Dr Thilani Chathurika Viharagoda Wagage, MBBS (Sri Lanka)

Obesity is a significant public health issue in Australia, with approximately two-thirds of adults affected
by overweight or obesity. Excess weight increases the risk of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers, while also imposing substantial healthcare costs and affecting
quality of life (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2023). Preventing obesity and supporting
healthy BMI maintenance requires evidence-based health promotion interventions that combine
individual behaviour change, community engagement, and supportive environments.
The Role of Primary Care
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) recognises obesity as a key health priority
and highlights the central role of general practitioners (GPs) in prevention and management. Primary care
interventions include routine assessment of BMI and waist circumference, early identification of at-risk
individuals, personalised lifestyle counselling, and referral to specialist or multidisciplinary services when
needed (RACGP, 2023). GPs provide ongoing support, reinforce healthy behaviours, and help patients set
realistic goals for weight management.
Health Promotion Strategies
Effective strategies integrate multiple approaches:

  • Nutrition Education: Community workshops and GP-led counselling teach practical skills for meal
planning, portion control, and reducing energy-dense foods while increasing intake of fruits,
    vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Physical Activity Promotion: Local exercise programs, workplace wellness initiatives, and
promotion of walking or cycling encourage regular physical activity.
  • Behavioural Support: Goal-setting, motivational interviewing, and peer support enhance self-
efficacy and adherence to lifestyle changes.
  • Policy and Environmental Interventions: Schools, workplaces, and community programs provide
healthier food options and create environments conducive to physical activity.
  • Medical Management: RACGP supports access to evidence-based obesity medications for
individuals with high BMI or comorbidities. Subsidisation via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme
(PBS) improves equity and long-term health outcomes (RACGP, 2023; Hospital Health, 2023).
    Behaviour Change Frameworks

Applying behaviour change models, including the Transtheoretical Model and Social Cognitive Theory,
helps practitioners tailor interventions to patients’ readiness to change, self-efficacy, and environmental
context. These frameworks increase the likelihood of sustained behaviour change and improved BMI
outcomes.
Conclusion
Preventing obesity and maintaining a healthy BMI is essential for reducing chronic disease risk, improving
quality of life, and decreasing healthcare burden in Australia. Evidence-based health promotion strategies
that combine GP-led counselling, community programs, policy support, and behaviour change
frameworks are critical for long-term success. By implementing integrated interventions, Australia can
support individuals in achieving healthy weight, encourage sustainable lifestyle changes, and enhance
population wellbeing.
