Medical practices must provide care in a respectful manner, considering each patient’s identity, body diversity, religion, and cultural beliefs.

Every patient should feel comfortable, free from judgment, and respected — regardless of race, appearance, gender, religion, or disability. When patients feel safe and valued, they are more likely to take part in their own care.

Course lectures

Lecture 1 — No discrimination

Everyone deserves equal care. Learn how bias can appear in subtle ways and how to keep care fair for all patients. Staff must not treat people differently based on race, appearance, gender, religion, disability, or any other personal attribute.

Lecture 2 — Culturally appropriate care

People from different cultures may have different views on health and treatment. They may understand or accept treatments in different ways. Staff should be aware of patients’ cultural backgrounds and be ready to provide care that respects these beliefs.

Respect starts at reception. Greet patients with positivity, friendliness, attention, empathy, and a helpful attitude. Never discuss, judge, or make jokes about another person’s beliefs, no matter how unusual they may seem.

Lecture 3 — Patient’s responsibility

Respect goes both ways. Patients also have a duty to be respectful. Staff have the right to a safe, comfortable workplace — free from aggression, harassment, or discrimination. Clear communication and mutual respect lead to better outcomes.

Lecture 4 — Respect patient choices

Staff must respect a patient’s choices, including their chosen practitioner where possible, their preference for a practitioner’s gender, and their decision to refuse certain treatments or investigations due to cultural or personal beliefs. Acknowledge choices without judgment and discuss alternatives when suitable.

Lecture 5 — Thank you

Bring the ideas together. Use this checklist each day: listen without prejudice; speak in plain language; respect beliefs and boundaries; keep the clinic welcoming to all.
